Let's learn from the Maestro
Maestro Method takes scientists out of the laboratory and into the working environments of people who master complex processes in entirely different fields. The idea is simple: by observing how experts beyond science lead teams, make decisions, communicate, respond to uncertainty and transform individual expertise into collective performance, scientists can reflect on and expand their own professional practice.
For the first Maestro Method, a group of Engineering Life scientists joined a rehearsal of the argovia philharmonic, led by conductor Douglas Bostock. They observed how nearly 70 musicians, each with their own expertise and responsibility, were guided towards a shared artistic performance — through leadership, listening, precision, dialogue and trust. After the rehearsal, the scientists met with Douglas Bostock to discuss the challenges of conducting an orchestra, coordinating highly skilled individuals and creating the conditions in which excellence can emerge. That evening, the scientists returned as members of the audience.
